Overviewing the current situation on the smartphone marketplace it becomes pretty difficult to ascertain what the future holds for this very lucrative and coveted industry. There are incredibly bright, small, big, sharp, fast, exquisite display screens, resolution is already beyond what human eye can perceive, there are already some smartphones with proper sound integrated, there is barely a niche where smartphone manufactures have not ventured into, including fitness and health. The latest move is made by providers who offer streaming services from Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu and similar that do not count towards the payment plan, i.e. they are not being charged extra, counting against or reducing customers’ data transfer limits.
LTE 4G is getting established everywhere by now, coverage is expanding and already there is talk about the next generation, 5G, which will slowly be planned out and implemented, whereby the whole project should start becoming available by 2020. But what have the smartphone manufacturers envisioned as the future of smartphones, besides shinier displays, faster processors, more RAM and storage, batteries that last longer and similar improvements? Is there anything in terms of technology that can be presented to customers, which will make a difference, something new, exciting, innovative?
Now in immediate future the trend seems to be not to pursue the technology advancements that much, but to hark to what the customers have to say. First of such attempts is the latest HTC device, the HTC One A9, which is a phone that is in no way as high end as, for instance, the HTC One M9. This time around, HTC tried to listen to requests made by their customers and created a device that was not the uber-flagship, but an all-rounder, a device that could exactly deliver the level of quality and versatility the HTC customers requested.
The other approach is to find something nobody else did until now, which LG and Samsung did with the curved and edge smartphones, or what Yota did with the twin display device and again LG with the new V10, which has two screens and two selfie cameras. Sony and Apple came out almost at the same time with the pressure touch display screens. Other smartphones, like the HTC Desire Eye, had a top of the line selfie camera, or the HTC One M9+ Supreme Camera, which had a 21 MP camera with laser autofocus and dual LED and dual tone flash. Sony just released their Xperia Z5 with 23 MP camera, which is far from Nokia 808 PureView’s 41 MP and the LG G4, despite having “only” a 16 MP shooter, provides incredible results without overly aggressive enhancements.
The future may bring smartphones we have already seen in movies such as the Avengers, where see-through glass smartphones were omnipresent. Other ideas include foldable smartphones, holographic smartphones, or rather smartphones that have holographic display screens, 3D displays on smartphones, completely curved devices, expandable flexi-screens and whatnot. Right now, the current most exciting smartphone on the market is the new BlackBerry Priv with the curved edge screen and the extendable four row BlackBerry keyboard.
